What:

Residents from Concord's Monument neighborhood to celebrate their $2.2 million One Bay Area Grant funding from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission for Detroit Ave. safety improvements.

The event culminates a yearlong process in which community members assessed walking and biking safety on Detroit Ave. and along with city staff and Contra Costa Health Services, proposed a plan to improve the street. Funds will be used to build sidewalks, bike lanes, signals, bus shelters and safe crossings on Detroit.

Who:

This grant was a result of collaboration funded by Kaiser between Contra Costa Health Services, Monument Community Partnership, First 5 Contra Costa Central County Regional Working Group, County Connection and the City of Concord. Concord Mayor Dan Helix, Councilmember Edi Birsan, Contra Costa Supervisor Karen Mitchoff, and community members who participated in the process will speak in a short program recognizing this unique partnership. Residents who participated in the workshops will participate in a ribbon cutting of new stop signs the city has already installed on Detroit Ave.

Meadow Homes Park, Spray Park Area, 1371 Detroit Ave. in Concord

Why:

Detroit Ave. is a neighborhood street in the heart of the Monument community that sees extremely high numbers of walkers, bikers and bus riders. The street lacks safe sidewalks, bike lanes and crossings, which has resulted in a number of accidents in recent years. This community-driven project aims to make the street safe for their families.
