Volunteers to Tally Contra Costa Homeless Population Next Week

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

NOTE TO EDITORS: Media representatives can accompany county staff for a field count in Central County the day of the count. Call 925-383-8845 prior to Jan. 30 to make arrangements.

What:

Community members are urgently needed to assist in a biennial count of the county's homeless population on Wednesday, January 30. Every two years, volunteers and service providers embark on a countywide mission to collect data for the homeless census conducted by Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS). To volunteer, email homelessprogram@hsd.cccounty.us, fill out the web-based form at http://cchealth.org/services/homeless/ or call 925-313-6124.

When:

The count takes place from 6 to 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 30.

Who:

Volunteers are needed from East, West and Central County, and must be at least 18 years old. Volunteers are required to attend a one-hour training session one week before the count.

Why:

By documenting the extent of the need, CCHS is able to request funding for the homeless services and housing provided throughout the County. Case management, substance abuse treatment, employment training and permanent housing are only some of what is provided through the homeless continuum of care.
