What:

The second annual West County African American Community Baby Shower will offer education about support services, workshops, food and gifts to African American mothers in Richmond's Iron Triangle and other West County neighborhoods. On-site child care is available and everyone will receive diapers bags and diapers. Raffles will be held for car seats and layettes. Everything is free!

Who:

The event is primarily for pregnant African American women and African American mothers of infants in West County, but all are welcome. Fathers and grandparents are encouraged to attend. The event is sponsored by Building Blocks for Kids Collaborative, the City of Richmond Parks and Recreation Department, and Contra Costa Health Services' African American Health Initiative. Representatives of more than a dozen other community agencies and programs will also be on hand to serve and educate families who attend.

When

The event will start at 10:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23.

Where

The West County African American Community Baby Shower will take place at the Nevin Community Center, 598 Nevin St. in Richmond.

Why

African Americans suffer from disproportionately high rates of fetal and infant mortality, premature births and ill babies. The event organizers aim to educate and empower African American families in order to improve birth outcomes and children's health.
