What:

Contra Costa Health Services has announced an additional clinic site offering free whooping cough vaccine. The clinic will take place every Wednesday at San Pablo City Hall. It is one of five Public Health Community Clinics in Contra Costa helping students comply with a new state law that requires all incoming seventh- through 12th-grade students to show proof they have received a whooping cough booster—called Tdap—before starting the 2011 school year.

Who:

Clinics are open to students 10 through 18 years old on a first-come, first-served basis. Students with health coverage are encouraged to go to their regular health care provider. Tdap vaccine is also offered at some pharmacies.

Why:

An estimated 100,000 students in Contra Costa are affected by the new school requirement. Health officials urge vaccination now to avoid a late summer rush.
