Early Head Start to receive "Breasteeding Friendly Award"

August 4, 2008

What:

To celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, (August 1-7), the Contra Costa Breastfeeding Task Force and Contra Costa Health Services' Family, Maternal & Child Health Programs will present the "Breastfeeding Friendly Award" to Employment and Human Services' Early Head Start Program at Contra Costa College.

Who:

Award recipients Stephanie Seaborg, Comprehensive Services Manager and Grace Chiu, Contra Costa College site coordinator, both with the Early Head Start Program, will receive the award for the creation of a lactation room that will be used by breastfeeding childcare clients and Early Head Start's breastfeeding employees.

When &Where:

The award presentation will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 7 at Contra Costa College, Early Learning Center, 2600 Mission Bell Drive, San Pablo, CA. 94806.

Why:

A survey of WIC participants found that many breastfeeding mothers return to school very soon after delivery and often have difficulty finding a place on campus to nurse or pump breast milk. By providing a lactation room the Early Head Start Program will decrease absenteeism for both students and employees and will enhance baby's health. Research shows breastfed babies are less likely to be obese and more likely to be healthy and successful in school.
