Contra Costa mental health treatment facility receives award

October 14, 2008

What:

A Contra Costa County mental health treatment facility will receive the 2008 Mother Baby Friendly Worksite Award for supporting a breastfeeding employee above and beyond California law requirements.

Who:

Crestwood Behavioral Health of Pleasant Hill is one of five statewide winners receiving the breastfeeding friendly award, which is given as a collaborative effort between California WIC Association, the California Breastfeeding Coalition, the Regional Breastfeeding Coalitions and the California Task Force on Youth and Workplace Wellness.

The treatment facility was nominated by Contra Costa Health Services' Family Maternal and Child Health through the Breastfeeding Task Force.

When &Where:

The award, which will be presented by Leah Cox, executive director of the California Task Force on Youth and Workplace Wellness, will take place October 15 at 12 noon at the State Capitol South Steps.

Why:

Although more than 50% of mothers with children under 1 year old work or are looking for work, more than 80% still choose to breastfeed, according studies. By supporting a mother's decision to breastfeed, employers decrease employee absenteeism due to the health benefits for both mother and baby, while increasing employee retention and enhancing employee productivity, loyalty, and morale.
