Press Release

Health Services Director Using Internet Podcast to Talk About a New Richmond Health Center

October 18, 2007

The search for a place to relocate the Richmond Health Center is the topic of the first podcast ever issued by Contra Costa Health Services.

The two-minute podcast features Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) Director William Walker, M.D., talking about the need to relocate the Richmond Health Center, now at 38th Street and Bissell. It was posted today at cchealth.org, the department website, and is accessible from the home page by computers with MP3 capability.

"This is an important issue for the community and for the City of Richmond, which wants our current site for commercial development," said Dr. Walker. "Residents of Richmond now have access to quality care at the Richmond Health Center, and we want that to continue in a new, improved site."

The Richmond City Council directed city staff to explore where the Health Center could be moved and a city-sponsored community forum on the topic is planned from 6 - 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at the Richmond Recreation Complex, 3230 MacDonald Ave.

"We think relocating the Health Center could be a win/win situation for everyone," said Walker. "The Health Center gets rebuilt, giving the community a state-of-the-art facility. The City gets the property and can generate revenue for badly needed services."

The Richmond Health Center was built in the 1960s and is the only one of CCHS' eight Health Centers that has never been replaced.

According to Walker, podcasting is a medium for Internet users is to hear about important issues in a different way. "Relocating the Richmond Health Center seems like a very timely topic for our first podcast," said Walker, adding that podcasts on other topics will be added regularly to the department website.
