"Celebrating North Richmond History," a free community event featuring art and culture exhibits, barbecue, speakers, and music and video entertainment.
When
Saturday, April 29, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where
Shields-Reid Community Center, 1416 Kelsey St., Richmond
Who
The event is organized by the North Richmond Healthy Neighborhood Project Action Team and sponsored by Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS), the CCHS HIV/AIDS Program, the Office of County Supervisor John Gioia, ArtsChange and Hammond Construction. The North Richmond Community Choir will perform, and there will be resources to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS.
Why
"This event is the third of five initiatives set by the Healthy Neighborhood Project Action Team last fall in its plan to overcome and prevent violence in North Richmond," said Dola Macaulay, a Community Health Organizer with CCHS. "A community choir was formed to develop the musical talent and creativity of the residents, as well as form a stronger community bond through music. A youth forum in December identified specific concerns that Supervisor Gioia's office is working on. Now, the team wants an event to show local residents the area's history before tackling its last two initiatives, which are grief counseling and adult mentorship."
