Environmental Justice Health Summit Addresses Health Disparities

What

An Environmental Justice Health Summit will be held focusing on disparities in health care and disease indicators affecting primarily African Americans, Latinos and Asians in West Contra Costa County. The public is invited to attend the event, which will include discussion on how pollution, poverty and race cause and contribute to diseases.

Who

Speakers include Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia; Epidemiologist Chuck McKetney, PhD, Director of Contra Costa Public Health's Community Health Assessment, Planning and Evaluation; Dr. Robert Agee, Doctors Hospital; and representatives of many county, community and environmental justice organizations.

The event is sponsored by West County Toxics Coalition, a nonprofit community group working to fight toxic exposure, protect the environment, and protect the health and safety of residents. "The Environmental Justice Health Summit will provide preventative information and strategies to reduce disparities in health care," said Coalition Executive Director Dr. Henry Clark.

Other sponsors include the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Neighborhood House of North Richmond, West County Asthma Coalition, TechLaw, Inc., West Contra Costa County Air Quality Environmental Justice Team and others.
