Press Release
Food Resources Available to All
November 4, 2003
Although bad weather and reduced employment may leave many families with less food on the table, a locally produced television show has good news about available food resources.
¡Vida Sana en Vivo!, a Spanish language television show produced by Contra Costa Health Services, will inform residents of three programs that provide families with food: Food Stamp, Women, Infants & Children (WIC), and the Food Bank. The show will debut on November 13 at 3:30 p.m. on Contra Costa Television (CCTV), and will replay November 14, 21 and 28 at 5 p.m. and November 20 at 3:30 p.m.
"November through February are the most challenging months for Latino families. The rain and bad weather can leave many construction workers, painters and field workers with reduced hours of employment. Less money means less food," said Blanca Campos, Health Educator with Contra Costa Health Services.
According to Campos, programs are available to help during times of need but lack of knowledge and rumors associated with the programs are preventing people from applying, particularly with the Food Stamp program.
"We are aware of the stigmas and fears associated with the Food Stamp program but improvements have been made in our county. That is why were doing this show, to inform families of those changes and break through barriers associated with the programs," said Campos.
Other programs that will be discussed on the show are the Women, Infants & Children program and the food banks, where food is available free of charge to qualifying applicants.
¡Vida Sana En Vivo! can be seen on Contra Costa Television, the county's public access cable TV station on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. and Fridays at 5 p.m. (In the Danville/Blackhawk area, channel 10; in Clayton and Concord, channel 15 and 18; in Oakley and Bethel Island, Martinez, Moraga, Orinda, Pacheco, Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek, channel 19; in Antioch, Bay Point, Pittsburg, San Ramon, Concord, Crockett, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Hercules, Pinole, Richmond, Rodeo, and San Pablo, channel 27.
